You have a great idea for a new app that, according to you, could solve an issue or offer something fun or convenient to users. The only problem is you have never created an app before, and you don’t know what to do next.
You could either hire a developer who will design and build your app for you, or you could learn how to do it yourself, using the many resources available on the internet.
Here are a few tips that will help you figure out how to design an app.
Step #1: Define your idea
Before you design an app, the first thing you should do is take a moment to define your idea. If you haven’t done it already, take a piece of paper and a pen, and answer a few questions.
What exactly do you want your app to do? What kind of issue is it going to solve? Why would people use your app instead of another one? How will you market it?
Step #2: Take a moment to examine different apps
Now that you have a better idea of what you want to create, go online and search for apps that appear to have a concept and a purpose similar to the one you want to design. You can learn from other apps on how to design an app of your own.
Look at how these apps work, take note of what they do great, and of what could be improved. The creators of these apps are your competitors, and you have to try to create something better and more efficient than what they have done.
Step #3: Do a few sketches on paper
Now that your idea is clearer than ever, it’s time to start working on a few sketches. It’s time to think about what the different parts of your app will look like.
Your user interface will need to be easy to use for the people you are targeting. You want your app to be simple to use and understand, but you also want it to look different from the other apps that are already available.
Step #4: Figure out how to wireframe your app
Before you can learn how to design an app, you first need to wireframe it. A wireframe is a bit like a blueprint of your app, and you need to work on it to turn your ideas into something functional.
There are a lot of wireframing tools available online, and you will have to search for one that you like so you can turn your sketches into something that looks like an app.
Step #5: Choose an app builder to design the back end of your app
There are also different app builders available online, and if you have never created an app before, you need to choose a tool that makes it easy for you to host your app, and to collect data about the actions of your app users.
Find a great app builder, take a look at your app wireframe, and start building your app.
Step #6: Ask for some feedback
You have built the very first version of your app, and you’re proud of your work. Congratulations! Now, you have to show your app to your friends and family, and to ask for some feedback.
Ask people you trust to try your app and to tell you what they like about it, what they don’t like, and what they don’t understand. This feedback session is an important step on how to design an app.
Step #7: Design the final look of your app
Criticism will help you create the best app you can create. Keep the feedback you have received in mind, and start working on the final look of your app.
Remember that you are designing this app for other people to use it, so if you like something about it that no one else liked, modify it. Your final app needs to look great, but it should also be easy to navigate.
Step #8: Test your app
The time has come to test your app to make sure everything is working as it should be. You need to make sure all the mobile forms, accessibility features, UX and UI appearances, and any other features are working properly. Search for app testing platforms, and use one to run different tests on your app.
If everything seems fine, search for beta testers who will try out and review your app for you before it’s ready to go live.
Step #9: Sign up for different app stores
You can decide to offer your app as a free download, or you can sell it in different app stores.
If you want to sell it, you will first need to create an account with Apple and Google Play, for example, so you can send them your completed app. It could take a few days before you can start selling your app in their stores.
Step #10: Release your app
Release your app, and congratulate yourself for not giving up on your idea and for working hard on it.
When your app appears in app stores, you still have to find ways to market it, so that users who need this type of app will find it, and want to buy and download it.
