If you are thinking of getting a dog, it could be for any number (or combination) of reasons. Dogs are without a doubt our best friends and we love them so much. They make such great friends, they can be good guard dogs, they are naughty and silly, they make us smile and the list just goes on.

There are some dog breeds that are considered to be really smart as well. However, this also depends on the time and effort a person is willing to put in to develop its potential. After all, all dogs can be trained. Let’s now take a look at some of the dog breeds that are considered to be among the smartest breeds.

1. The Border Collie

Many people claim that the Border Collie is most likely the smartest of all dog breeds. They are very energetic dogs. They are a herding dog breed and are used on farms to herd livestock such as sheep. They are used all over the world for this reason and they do an absolutely fantastic job!

They are incredibly agile and athletic. They also make great pets but most people think of them as working dogs the moment you mention the Border Collie, arguably the smartest dog breed.

2. The Poodle

The poodle is the national dog of France and were used as retrievers. There is still a bit of a dispute as to whether the poodle’s origin is French or German, but most people tend to associate it with France. They have been used to track and hunt. These guys are not only smart but they are hypoallergenic which is great for people who may have allergies. They are normally associated with three sizes; Standard, Miniature and Toy.

3. The German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Apart from being smart fellows, these beautiful and regal dogs are also confident and courageous. They also make very good working dogs. Many of us have seen them as a police dog but they are also found in other services as well. These dogs are incredibly loyal to their family and will sometimes even be loyal within the family, where they may choose one person in the family and be incredibly loyal to that person. They are also great with kids.

4. The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever has such a pleasant and kind face and sometimes look like they are smiling! They are friendly and very intelligent. Many are chosen as service dogs, especially for those who are visually impaired. They are also used as search-and-rescue dogs. Golden Retriever puppies are known for being loving companions. They are big, powerful dogs and are very good at retrieving birds undamaged when out hunting with their masters.

They do require a fair amount of grooming and actually shed quite a lot. 2 former U.S. Presidents, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan both had Golden Retrievers.

5. The Doberman Pinscher

The first breeder of the Doberman Pinscher was a German tax collector named Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. Tax collection was a dangerous occupation and he decided to breed the perfect dog to accompany and protect him during his duties. He wanted to create a loyal, strong, fierce and intelligent breed and came up with the Doberman Pinscher. The breed is named in his honour.

You can always train your dog to obey commands and do small things even if your dog is not in this list. Dogs love to make their masters happy. They just don’t realize how happy they make us.
