When it comes to addressing your plumbing needs, you can never be too careful. If left unattended, unaddressed plumbing needs can lead to back-up in your drains, sewage build-up, or even murky, unclean water.

You do not need to be a plumber to be able to identify the warning signs that your home is in dire need of plumbing services. Just follow this simple guide to become a plumbing watchdog in your own home. These sneaky signs do not have to gang up on you all at once if you keep careful watch. Here are five things to watch for:

1. Big water bill

This can be a sure-fire sign there’s something wrong with your plumbing in your home. If all of a sudden you get a plumbing bill that is outrageous by comparison to your other ones and there is no change in weather or environment conditions, something is probably internally wrong with your plumbing. A spike in bills can be an indicator that a plumbing issue is to blame.

2. Murky water

Unhealthy, unclear water is a definite sign that you have plumbing issues. For the sake of you and your loved ones’ health, do not let unclear water go untreated for a significant amount of time. Address the issue as soon as you notice it. Unclear water can lead to disease. Usually, murky water is an indicator that your water heater is near the end of its life. Call a plumber to check it out to be sure.

3. Surprise puddles everywhere

This is one of the worst things a homeowner can experience – weird puddles coming up out of nowhere in the home. Not only can this lead to mold, but damage of items that may be around or near the puddles in your home. If you do not catch the drip, you might not catch the damage, and not catching the damage could lead to pools of water versus puddles.

4. Bad smells in the drain

Did you just realize the weird smell coming from inside your house is coming from your drains? Yuck! You know it’s time to call a plumber when you are doing the dishes in the sink and cannot escape the raunchy odor lifting from below. A plumber will know best how to solve the issue and identify where the odor is coming from in your piping. It may be time for that cleaning after all.

5. Mold and mildew suddenly appearing everywhere

Excessive moisture from even the smallest of leaks can lead to the sudden appearance of mold and mildew in the home. Keep your family and home safe and healthy. Call a plumber if you notice unexplained mold and mildew buildup throughout the home. The longer you leave it unattended, the more likely it is to grow and spread throughout the home. This is the last thing you want. Ensure the health and safety of your home and loved ones early on.
